We need to discover and live our purposes.
Hi everyone. I’m Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. In episode #105 we discussed the importance of developing our identity from who we want to BE instead of what we DO. After all, we’re human beings, not human doings. We saw in Genesis 1:27a that God made humans to BE like himself. If we want to have an identity that at the root cannot be shaken or changed, that’s where we aim – to BE like God.
Another fundamental need we have in our lives is to discover and live our purposes. Proverbs 20, verse 5 says, “The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.” For those of us feeling as though we do not know our purposes, it’s an encouragement that we are able to discover them. Sometimes we make the process too complicated. That’s when, like the Scripture says, we can systematically look for opportunities to draw the purposes out of us. As we place ourselves in various circumstances, we’re able to experience what makes our hearts beat a little faster. Not all opportunities will excite us, but that’s ok. If we find out that something isn’t for us, that is also helpful information. “To draw out,” is an action. It makes me think of a well with a bucket. If you want water, you have to draw out the bucket. The same is true of knowing our purposes. We must take action – one step after the other – to discover our purposes.
At the end of the day, despite what the world may say or what you might think, God has destined you for great things – they may be skills you learn from being with others in your everyday life, or they may take years of formal training. Each is as important as the other. Identity comes from being like God. Purposes are from him and need to be drawn out.
