Hi everyone. I’m Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. During this season, the word peace is often on Christmas cards and decorations. But what is peace?
I read a story recently about a missionary, Jim Walton, who was finding it difficult to translate the word peace into the language of the people. About the same time, the village chief, Fernando, was assured of a short plane ride to an area that would have been a several-day walk for him. Unfortunately, the plane was late arriving so Fernando set off walking. When the plane finally arrived, a runner was sent to get him. However, by the time Fernando made it back to the village, the plane had left. Understandably, he was angry with the mistake and repeated a phrase that translated to, “I don’t have ONE HEART. I don’t have ONE HEART.” Others in the village told Mr. Walton that ONE HEART meant, “There is nothing between you and the other person,” meaning there was nothing that caused a separation in the relationship. Fernando was angry with whoever caused the mistake with the plane. He didn’t have ONE HEART. He didn’t have peace.
I think we can all relate to Fernando – he was mad and frustrated. He wasn’t experiencing serenity, harmony, or a calm spirit.
Mr. Walton had his needed translation of peace – ONE HEART. We can have peace or ONE HEART with God through Jesus, as he repairs all separation. As we celebrate His birth, let’s look to him as our Prince of Peace, our Prince of ONE HEART. He brings serenity and harmony. He brings a calmness within. He brings us back to God. In John 14:27 Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
May God’s peace be you! Live the way you want to be remembered.
See you next week.
