Hi everyone! I’m Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. Autumn is here for a while and we now have rich colors, cool crisp mornings, and the need to clean up our flower beds and yards. As I thought about the process of pulling out annual plants and cutting back perennials, it also made me think of the necessity of overall pruning. Pruning of plants is the practice of trimming away dead or overgrown parts to encourage new and healthy growth. If it’s important to do some cutting to help plants remain healthy, how important is it for us to do the same?
Our pruning is essential to free up time and space to be present for what is important and cherished. Answering a few questions truthfully may be all you and I need to start taking some steps to enhance the way we live.
What steals your joy? What responsibility or activity puts you into a funk whenever you engage in it? Do you dread going to work or that weekly volunteer opportunity you agreed to years ago? Is there a conversation you need to have with your employer or leader? Is it time to make minor or major changes to move you in a direction of satisfaction and enjoyment?
What do you find to be life draining? Instead of pruning an activity out of our lives, maybe it’s more about cutting out bad attitudes or negative opinions that have come to be a consistent part of us. Are we willing to peel back the layers to get to the root cause?
In Jeremiah 6:16 the Lord says, “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” This Scripture tells us to ask questions, to examine how we’re living and then make needed changes for the promise of rest for our souls. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t desire a restful soul. This Fall, let’s prune to be healthy! Live the way you want to be remembered.
See you next week.
