What if for a few minutes each day we set our phones in a different room, turn off the TV or podcast, and take some deep breaths?

Hi everyone. I’m Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. The other day I noticed one of my potted plants on my porch was completely brown. I’ve gotten better through the years, but keeping plants healthy can be a struggle for me. Either I water them too much, or I water them sporadically. We all know, plants need consistent watering, but too much of a good thing can be harmful.

This idea caused me to think about the way we live our lives. We may have an abundance of “water” in our lives, meaning an abundance of any one thing we pay too much attention to. We may overwork, overeat, watch too much TV or be on our devices too much. Over indulging in any activities – even good ones – can cause significant difficulties in our relationships, keep us from pursuing our dreams, keep us tethered when we need to be free, or tire us to the point of exhaustion.

Jesus set a good example for understanding the need for quiet and rest. Mark 6:30-31 says, “The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, ‘Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest for awhile.’ He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his disciples didn’t even have time to eat.” Even Jesus and his disciples needed time to renew when there was too much “water” in their lives. How much more then do we need quiet and rest?

What if for a few minutes each day we set our phones in a different room, turn off the TV or podcast, and take some deep breaths? What if for a few minutes we assess if there is too much of anything in our lives? What if we close our eyes and just be?

Live the way you want to be remembered. See you next week.
