Hi everyone. This is Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. I saw a study once that said when parents are asked what their main goal is for their children, a majority said they hope their children are happy.

As I’ve thought about this answer, a question has frequently run through my mind, “Is happiness truly the goal?” We all like to feel good and carefree, laugh, and enjoy life. We all need days and periods of time that are pleasant. We know, though, that life isn’t only good times. We know everyone has challenges and difficult situations that pop up in which we don’t feel happy. What then, do we truly want for the people we love, and ourselves?

Happiness cannot be the goal, but is the result of having a meaningful life, to feel fulfilled. To move toward feeling fulfilled, ask yourself questions similar to these: How did I invest my time as a child? What do I enjoy doing so much that I forget to rest and eat? If I had all the money needed, how would I invest my time? If you’re a person of faith, ask the Lord to direct your steps.

We can choose to take steps in either direction, forward to find meaning and fulfillment or backward to stay safe. Beneficial steps forward are found in Psalm 37:3-4. “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Trust, dwell, enjoy, and delight in the Lord. When we take these steps then we will begin to feel fulfilled and as a result, be happy. Live the way you want to be remembered! See you next week.
