Hi everyone! I’m Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. Last week we looked at selecting focus words for the year that will help us become the people we want to be. This past week my granddaughters and I visited the library in their home town. There were “grab and go” sacks with activities in them for the children to take home. The first item Isla pulled out had a fill-in-the-blank sentence, “My one word is …” After a brief explanation, she immediately responded with a big smile, “My family!” and wrote it on the line. Focusing on the word “family” for 2021 is an unlimited way for her to grow kindness, learn about sacrifice, have fun, and to love others.
A book was shared with me that may help you and your children select a one word for the year. I’m a huge fan of children’s literature and believe that often the books intended for children hit adults right where we need it. The name of the book is “One Word for Kids” by Gordon, Britton, and Page. It’s a school setting with the teacher assigning her students the task of selecting one word for the year. She gives them three steps: One: to look into their hearts and ask, “What one word will help me be my best?” Two: to look up. “Look up and around and believe that there is a one word meant for you. If you’re open to it, it will come to you.” Three: to look out and live your one word.
Look in, up & out. How simple of an explanation to find a word that will encourage you and your children to have the best year ever!
1 Corinthians 10:31 gives more encouragement. It says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” In everyday life, wanting to be the best we can be, looking in, up and out through our focus word will bring glory to God. This is the Word of the Lord. Live the way you want to be remembered.
