Hi everyone. I’m Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. Happy Thanksgiving! This is obviously a different year, but hopefully we can choose to be thankful anyway, which will then bring us joy. As I think back over the years of Thanksgiving celebrations, one particularly stands out when I was about 11 or 12. My mom and the three of us kids lived in an apartment that had been re-habbed. We were the first to live in it so everything was new, including carpeting in the kitchen.
Mom had told us we were going to have a roasted chicken on Thanksgiving Day instead of a turkey. I immediately rejected that idea and said that we HAD to have turkey on Thanksgiving. Please…can we have a turkey? She said she’d try, and sure enough she brought home a turkey. I remember the smell of it baking and helping her to get other dishes ready. As she pulled the turkey out of the oven, somehow it slipped out of her hands, and bounced across the carpeted kitchen floor, along with the turkey drippings, which you all know is grease! I will forever remember her face as I pulled my eyes from the turkey when it finally stopped bouncing. She had a look of bewilderment, and then broke out in a full belly laugh. Of course, that response set the tone for the clean-up of the carpet and walls, and the meal when we finally got to it. It was a time of thanksgiving and joy.
One of our family traditions is to read Psalm 100 on Thanksgiving.
“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”
This is the word of the Lord! Be thankful first and watch the joy flow in behind. Live the way you want to be remembered. Thanks for being here. See you next week.
