Heart Pieces

Hi everyone. I’m Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. Recently I saw a friend’s post on Facebook about the sorrow he had from closing a business he loved. Even though it’s been several years, it’s still difficult for him to pass the building that had housed his business. I replied that I’d had a similar experience with a specific building. Many of us have had difficulties that cause grief and we must deal with the physical reminders that can cause visceral responses. In my case, it wasn’t the building itself, but what the building represented - the ending of relationships that were so important to my family and me. It was knowing I had poured so much of myself into the experience only to have to walk away. My guess is that my friend feels the same.

A few days ago, I saw a quote by Shane Koyczan. He said, “If your heart is broken, make art with the pieces.” We’ve all had heartache, challenges, and grief. Definitely some more than others. He’s encouraging us to take what has happened and make something of beauty from it. Often a brokenhearted person has compassion, warmth, and gentleness for others, especially those experiencing the same kind of pain.

You may not yet be able to breathe normally. You may still have frequent tears. That’s okay. When you’re ready, look at your pieces and begin creating. The result may be so simple you feel you can’t even name it. Do it anyway. As you begin creating with the broken pieces, your breathing may become more regular. Your tears may or may not subside. Through creating, live the way you want to be remembered.
