Words to SPARK your Heart-Song – Episode #171

October 30, 2023

Hi everyone. I’m Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. Author Lily Brooks-Dalton received the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Fiction Runner-Up award. I’ve not read any of her work, but one of Brooks-Dalton’s comments caught my attention. She said, “My understanding of peace is that it never arrives alone. Without the company of chaos or conflict, peace is only an abstraction, thin and vaporous. Peace exists most fully in the center of the storm, wrapped in furious winds, held together by discord, and made tangible in terrible, beautiful contrast. I don’t know that there is another way to experience peace, or to write about it.”

This makes me think of Jesus and his disciples being in the midst of a storm while in a boat. Jesus slept, but the disciples were so scared, they woke him so he could do something about it. They desired peace in the midst of chaos. They sought the One who could do something – and he did. In another conversation with the disciples, Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

As we navigate this world of chaos and conflict, there is peace available in the midst.

In the words of Jude, the half-brother of Jesus, “May mercy, peace and love be multiplied to you.” Amen.

Live the way you want to be remembered.
