Words to SPARK your Heart-Song – Episode #168

Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.

Hi everyone. I’m Sherry Douglas with Heart-Song. Recently I saw a quote by Ludwig Jacobowski, a German poet, “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” That’s a mind shift, isn’t it? When life takes a turn that is not what we planned or wanted, it’s natural for us to grieve the change. Grieving is necessary to be able to move on to the new things in our lives. What this quote is directing us to is that at some point, and it’s going to be different for all of us, it’s imperative we begin making the shift to smiling at the memories instead of crying or lamenting the change. Change is difficult. Some people move through it quickly and others need more time. Neither is the WRONG response. The right response is allowing yourself what you need, not what others think you need.

What we want to be mindful of, though, is that we don’t get stuck. Please know I’m not making light of life tragedies, like the death of a loved one. Those life changes take immense time and love to walk through. Do what is needed. However, there are other life changes that make us sad because it’s not what we wanted. Maybe we had to stop attending college classes for a time because our savings account dwindled. Maybe we had to move out of a town we loved due to a job change. Maybe we have a new supervisor at work, and our first one was not only great at her job, but also a close friend. All of these kinds of situations involve having wonderful memories. We can expect to have life changes. We can grieve, and then take steps to adjust from crying to smiling. It’s a process.

Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened!” Live the way you want to be remembered.
