Words to SPARK your Heart-Song from our co-founder Sherry Douglas. Episode 1.

This quote can be applied to so many areas of life. People are tired….tired of fighting! Whether it is at work, parenting, marriage, ministry, fighting for breakthrough, or health. Don’t make a decision to quit in a moment of exhaustion. For many people rest is a discipline. Allow yourself to rest, do something you enjoy, treat yourself, get refueled, and recognize where your strength truly comes from.

Focus Word of 2018

For the last few years I have chosen a focus word at the beginning of a new year. As we welcome 2019, I encourage each of you to also consider choosing a word of focus and intention. I have been reflecting on 2018, and I have realized how meaningful my focus word, PEACE, has been in the journey of this past year. The truth is I did not choose the word for a profound reason; I was merely seeking quiet and calm amongst a busy schedule and two tween sons that can be shockingly loud at times. It wasn’t too far into the year that I realized the reason I thought I chose the word PEACE, was very different from the beauty and fullness that would be revealed in the coming months.
Early last year I found myself at a community forum where a group of pacifists had the courage and grace to speak before a room of people that were primarily not sharing their view. After witnessing and being moved by this I wrestled with the dichotomy of watching people fighting for peace. I began to delve into the fuller, spiritual and historical meaning and impact of PEACE. I am not fully sure how or why, but that evening and that witnessing changed me. It was a turning point for me and in some ways a preparation and change of awareness that prepared me for what came next.
Soon after that forum, I found myself literally hanging from my rafters after falling through the attic floor to the garage floor. The days and months ahead left me faced with many questions. Would I be able to walk unassisted again? Would I be able to use my hand and arm again? Each of these questions had rippling questions and variables that accompanied them. As I faced these realities and potential realties, I worked toward finding peace. The peace I sought was no longer for quiet and tranquility. What I found was the peace that is fuller and encompassed best in the Hebrew word, “Shalom,” or “peace.” In Hebrew it is fullness, completeness, or a wholeness, that for me evoked a response to give back.
One evening this past autumn I lost focus for a bit. I had become rather discouraged and seemingly “came to terms with” the likelihood that after so many months of physical therapy, it was unlikely that full use of my arm would return. I decided to stop treatments and forgo any surgery. That night as I was getting ready for bed, I saw what my son had written on my mirror:
Mom, you are loved, and I believe you will experience full healing in your arm, don’t give up.
Love, Ryan.
In receiving that Shalom I decided to not give up and had surgery that resulted in unlikely results.
As 2018 was nearing a close, I was flooded by emotion in a moment that seemed to beautifully encompass the past twelve months. I was in a candlelight church service and the last verse of Silent Night was about to be sung. There was a single tear that ran down my cheek, as I was able to join in the custom of raising my arm high as I raised the candle during the last verse of the song. After a year not knowing if I would have use of my arm again, PEACE! I offer Shalom to you for 2019 and hope that you join me in choosing a word of focus and intention for this New Year.
So, what’s your word?

So thankful…

Heart-Song, Inc. was incorporated on May 1, 2013. In June 2014 we received our not-for-profit status. Attached is the Annual Report for 2016 and as we look back at what God is doing in people’s lives, we are humbled, thrilled, and excited as we move forward with purpose.

The Mission & Vision Team made the decision the focus of 2016 would be Compass Statement creation as people sought a directional tool in living their every day lives. A step to defining and pursing their passion and purpose.

Take a look! The Heart-Song, Inc. 2016 annual report can be found here.

“I am living out my Compass statement in various aspects of my life. I’m currently job searching and use my Compass Statement to clearly provide a description of who I am to prospective employers. In my personal life, I have come to know that I have a passion for helping those with the grieving process of losing a loved one, and have started the process to become a volunteer for Hospice of Miami County to help at Generations of Life and Camp Courageous. I also have been trying to use my Compass Statement everyday by talking to and getting to know people and doing little things to help others.”

Live Gloriously

Recently Tara Frantz of Beauty Revolution at Ruby’s Salon was given the opportunity by Thrivent Financial to provide three people the opportunity to take part in visual testimonies. The recipients are people who have created Compass Statements at Heart-Song, Inc. This collaboration is doubly a celebration for us since Tara was inspired by her own Compass Statement to make it happen!

“Owning who I am in Christ, celebrating the gifts of feminity -Live Gloriously!”

What a wonderful surprise Heart-Song, Inc. received last week! A generous gift arrived unexpectedly with communication to expect it to be matched by his employer! This is such a blessing to those we serve; we thought it important to share with you! Will you please consider making a year-end donation to Heart-Song? If your employer matches it, that’s just icing on the cake!

Being Ready

Through the last few years, Tara has been one of Heart-Song’s biggest cheerleaders. Each month we catch up with one another and almost without fail, she tells me of conversations she’s had with others referring them to Heart-Song. Heart-Song guides individuals and groups to define and pursue their passion and purpose. One designated focus we offer is Mapping Sessions, specifically guiding individuals to create their own unique, inspiring Compass Statements. A Compass Statement directs the next steps for living your most meaningful life. For some, this a spiritual act, for others it’s rational direction.

A couple of times, I asked Tara when she wanted to schedule her Compass Statement session, and she had a reply each time, basically stating she wasn’t ready. I reminded her often there was nothing to have “ready,” except an appointment date. I also told her she was able to bring anything she felt was important to her or her life journey, (i.e. a favorite quote or Scripture), but even that was not necessary.

The awesome and inspiring thing about Compass Statements is that you come just being you. Our name, Heart-Song, is not coincidental. We believe each person has a “heart song,” which is described as being the essence of who you are. Through conversation, willingness to think through a few things and trusting the process, you will leave with a guiding statement for living your life. It’s freeing, energizing, and keeps you on track to be the best you.

“Creating a Compass Statement seemed intimidating, so naturally I came up with excuses until my more sensible side said, “you’ve got nothing to loose” – It’s true, I had everything to gain! Now, two months later, I continue to be inspired by my Compass Statement and my experience at  Heart-Song with Sherry and Christin. In the time I spent with them I truly felt celebrated for who I am. They listened, really listened, to my heart and to what God was saying. Together, we formed a Compass Statement that proclaims my unique identity in Christ. I love how these words aren’t based on what I do or don’t do. These words call out God’s best, just the way He makes us. I’m so grateful for this very personal affirmation through my Compass Statement.”

Part of the Solution

Deb came to Heart-Song knowing she was searching for her next way of giving back, a value she has always held close. She developed her Compass Statement and has lived it well! Since then she’s been on a mission trip to Baltimore, visited an organization in southern Ohio that helps those in poverty, trained to volunteer with a local hospital, and is organizing a church mission trip to West Virginia to help with restoration following the severe flooding. She’s definitely living out her HeartSong – the essence of who she is.

“I am honored that Sherry and Christin invited me to do a mapping session with Heart-Song earlier this year. They helped me to look at myself, my goals, and what I loved to do…..to sort out my emotions and connect them with my talents. They guided me through tears and laughter……and when it all washed out, I had a Compass Statement to live my life by, a path to new adventures in volunteering, and a deep respect for what they do. I will forever be grateful. Thank you for the work of Heart-Song… without you I wouldn’t be heading out this morning with a spring in my step and a lightness in my heart….just can’t wait to see what God has in store for me!”
